Choose the right competition kettlebell weight for your strength level and training goals. This guide covers progression, technique, and trade-offs for the 4-32kg range.
Quick answer
Start with a weight that allows you to maintain proper form for 10–15 reps of your main movement. For most women, that is 8–12kg; for most men, 12–16kg. The 4–32kg range covers everyone from beginners to advanced lifters.
Why competition kettlebells are different
Competition kettlebells have a uniform shape and handle size across all weights, from 4kg to 32kg. This consistency makes it easier to practice the same technique whether you are snatching a 12kg or a 24kg. The trade-off is that the handle does not get thicker as the weight increases, so very heavy bells may feel different in your grip than a standard cast-iron bell of the same weight.
The jump between weights matters
The standard progression in competition kettlebells is 2kg steps (e.g., 12kg, 14kg, 16kg). A 2kg jump is manageable for most people, but going from 16kg to 20kg (a 4kg jump) can be tough. If you are between sizes, consider buying an intermediate weight rather than skipping ahead.
Decision rules for choosing your weight
- For swings and deadlifts: Choose a weight you can swing for 15–20 reps with a stable torso and no lower-back strain. For most beginners, that is 8–12kg for women, 12–16kg for men.
- For clean, press, and snatch: Pick a weight you can press overhead 5–10 times without wrist pain or shoulder compensation. This is often 2–4kg lighter than your swing weight.
- For double kettlebell work: Each bell should be 4–8kg lighter than your single-bell press weight. Two 12kg bells are safer than two 16kg bells if your press is weak. If you plan to work with two bells, buy a pair of the lighter weight first.

Competition Kettlebell 4-32kg
Who should choose which weight
Best for
- Beginners who want to build foundational strength and technique with a single competition kettlebell in the 8–16kg range
- Advanced lifters who need incremental jumps from 16kg up to 32kg for heavy swings, snatches, and double-bell work
Not for
- Lifters who prefer a thick handle for grip training on heavy weights (standard cast-iron bells offer thicker handles at high weights)
- Anyone who only needs a single light weight for mobility or rehabilitation (a vinyl or neoprene kettlebell may be more comfortable)
